I made it to LA! Woot!
It was my first time using Craigslist rideshare but it worked out great for me. I met and had coffee with my driver the day before and got a good vibe from him, so I went with it. We ended up picking up French couple backpacking around North America and a biker biking his way back down the coast, he’d come from California to Seattle. All really great people, all really stuffed into one two door Mercury Cougar.
We drove in to Eugene as the sun was setting, it was absolutely stunning. I want to go back and spend some time in Eugene, the natural beauty there is gorgeous. We stayed the night at this really nice house, it was a friend of our biker’s place. We all pooled together the food that we had and made dinner! Rice with my smoked salmon and then s’mores with bulk Theo chocolate I had brought. The French couple had never had a s’more before! Needless to say, they loved them!
The next day we headed out to San Francisco, but only made it to Northern California, which was great because it gave us the chance to camp among California’s massive redwoods. They call these trees giants; they are truly dwarfing. We camped that night and made the most delicious meal out of, again, food we pooled together. Over the fire we cooked bacon and added it to this instant pasta with parmesan cream sauce and cracked an egg into it all. Delicious! I saved the bacon fat to cook up eggs and toast the next morning.
Then we headed off again, this time making it to San Francisco! We dropped off the French couple and then there were two. Colin, the driver, and I. We had a mission to get to LA that night, but that meant crossing a huge chunk of California, check out a map, that’s a long way. But we did it! We got to LA and I’ll never forget that moment. It was dark out, maybe 9:30pm, and I was snacking on Theo chocolate, the last of it. In fact, I had come down to my last piece. It was Theo origin Madagascar bar, just one little piece, the size I always cut chocolate bars into for customers to sample, that was all. It was melty from the warm California air and just dissolved on my tongue, with the perfect acidity that causes your mouth to water, like raspberries and lemons. I’ll miss you Madagascar! My favorite chocolate in the world.
Things have worked out perfectly so far. I couldn’t really believe it because I was with absolute strangers, but then again, so were they! The whole ride down to LA ended up costing me $60. I got to meet new people, camp, cook. Not bad at all! And now when I get to France I’ll know someone in Lyon!
Now I’m on Mission: Obtain an Argentine Passport!
I’ll be couchsurfing for the first time in LA. I’ll let you know how that goes soon…
